SBIR
The Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program was created by the federal government 1982 to stimulate technological innovation, use small business to meet federal R&D needs, encourage the participation by disadvantaged and minority-owned businesses in technological innovation, and increase private sector commercialization derived from federal R&D.
Ohio established Team SBIR, a consortium of the MTSBDCs, Ohio Department of Development’s SBIR Program staff, successful SBIR companies, university representatives, SBIR service providers, and other industrial partners to meet the commercialization assistance needs of the state’s technology-based businesses. Emphasis is placed on assisting emerging and under-served firms.
Team SBIR will strengthen the technological competitiveness of Ohio's small businesses by:
-
Developing a comprehensive plan to better assist client companies and attract new clients from broader geographic and technological cross-sections of Ohio
- Fully utilizing statewide resources in Ohio's SBIR program and MTSBDCs to better coordinate and improve the approach to providing SBIR commercialization assistance to clients
- Expanding Ohio's SBIR outreach programs to integrate key commercialization elements
- Establishing an SBIR mentor network in which businesses that have been successful in the SBIR program to provide business advice and counseling to Ohio's high-technology small businesses
- Building a comprehensive and effective knowledge base that will provide web-based storage, manipulation, and retrieval capabilities that support SBIR in Ohio
